Size North America has a mission of 3D laser scanning the North American population.

3D laser scanning company logoGetting the correct size clothing can be a real challenge for some people, but this project has far greater importance than it might appear on the surface. A little research reveals that Human Solutions GmbH, based in Germany is the company behind a worldwide study involving 3D laser scanning human populations around the globe.

Why, you might ask? Well that is not entirely clear, but with BMW, Daimler and Fruit of the Loom involved, as well as a number of universities one would have to guess that it has something to do with a much larger research project than simply getting the right size suit or underwear.

Human Solutions of North America, Inc. is behind the local initiative which they are calling Size North America. They have the scanner set up in a trailer that they are taking across North America at invitation from various groups. In this case it was Texas Tech University. There is an opportunity for groups to sponsor a survey at your facility.

From their website Human Solutions serves the fashion and automotive industries with data about the changing size of the population. They stress their ability to optimize size & fit ― body dimension and ergonomic simulation in CAD and that this information can be of high strategic value to fashion and automotive companies.

Human Solutions notes that there is little data available like this and that it simply does not exist for children. This would seem to be an example of a Big Data use of 3D laser scanning. It never stops.
